COVID-19 is the global crisis with its planetary impacts including various sustainability crises. As we are currently in the midst of a transition to a new post-COVID reality we must rely on scientific understanding of these processes. The pandemic has revealed numerous weaknesses in coordination at all scales: local, regional, national and global. Despite the predictability of threats of this nature, almost all countries were poorly prepared and we saw the inadequacy of current global science-policy interface structures to address the common challenges facing the people. Scientific understanding of the nature of these transformations plays an important role in designing new governance structures that can create the prerequisites for the necessary processes across differences and inequalities both inside and outside our societies. Science diplomacy should become the basis of the required coordination structure for global futures.
