World Trade Organization (WTO)
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed by the bulk of the world’s trading nations and ratified in their parliaments. The goal is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible.
How public diplomacy practitioners can engage with the World Trade Organisation?
The WTO maintains regular dialogue with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on various issues related to international trade. The aim is to enhance cooperation and increase NGOs' awareness of WTO activities and the role of the rules-based multilateral trading system.
Reporting on the Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank held in October 2023 in Marrakesh, a representative from the Institite for public diplomacy- O. Weretelnik, PhD- noted that low income populations are the most affected by the current rising food, energy and medical care prices. He highlighted the vulnerable groups continue to be disproportionately affected.
“Trade plays a vital role, ensuring food and medicine can cross borders freely. Better trade policies that spread the benefits of trade more broadly are needed to make trade more inclusive“, he said.
Speaking at the annual meeting of the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund in Marrakesh, Morocco, on 13 October, Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala highlighted the importance of increasing access to trade finance for small businesses to assist their integration into global supply chains.
